Aakash Tablet is set to bridge the big India DIGITAL DIVIDE. Through Aakash tablet, students in India would have access to good quality study content like video lectures, e-books etc.
Aakash tablet has gone through stringent testing by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT- Rajasthan) who was commissioned by National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT).
At the launch of Aakash tablet, a packed Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, Mr. Kapil Sibal showcased Aakash to 1500 dignitaries comprising students, industry leaders and academicians. Everyone was given a live demonstration of high definition streaming videos on the low-cost-access-device which was soon followed by seamless web browsing and demonstration of educational applications. As part of the government's mission, 10 million units would be spread out throughout the country to post-secondary students.

Datawind, a UK- based company that deals with wireless web access products and services brings Aakash tablet to India. The CEO of the company Mr. Suneet Singh Tuli says, This is a made-in-India product. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do this. He also added, It is igniting people's imagination. Previously nicknamed "Sakshat", the tablet has now been launched as Aakash. It is the world's cheapest tablet that comes packed with loads of features. The tablet has a perfect configuration for students. It is a great educational tool and being cost- effective, has a lot to offer. It is a 2.2 Android tablet that comes with a 7 touch screen. It has a battery that lasts up to 3- hours of active usage. The commercial version of Aakash tablet is named Ubislate7 and is priced at Rs. 2,999. Ubislate7 is expected to hit the market early December.
The Indian government wants at least 10 million students to get their hands on the wonder tablet. This will help tackle the digital illiteracy that exists in India. Since very few people in India have access to broadband, so the commercial version Ubislate7 will also have GPRS. As a result, internet would be in reach of millions through cell phone towers.
